Cattle is beloved to be the most essential amongst all domestic animals. It is no surprise that cattle farming is a very profitable trade, and an easy to maintain and traditional business.

However, if you must get better profit from the cattle farming trade, you will have to select a cattle breed that is both suitable and productive for your farm. There are several cattle breeds in farms all around the world.

Some of them are more common in some places than others. Some cattle breeds are best for milk production and some that are highly meat productive.

Some cattle breeds are famous for both meat and milk production. The different cattle breeds that exist are classified below based on their production purpose and origin.

Classification on the Basis of Production

Cattle in this category are classified according to the effectiveness of meat and milk production, there are four cattle breeds based on this classification.

Milk Breed

All cattle breeds in this category are highly milk productive. While almost every breed can produce milk, some of the most famous milk productive breeds are Sahiwal, Holstein Friesian, red Sindhi, jersey, brown swiss, Ayrshire, etc.

Beef Breed

The cattle in these breeds are very popular for their meat productivity. The most famous cattle breed that is highly meat productive is beefmaster, Angus, brahman, shorthorn, devon, hallikar, etc.

Both Beef and Milk Productive

The cattle breeds in this category are famous for both their beef and milk production. Tharparkar, Haryana, red pool, milking shorthorn, kankrej, etc. are some of the most famous in this group.

Draft Breed

The male (bull) of the cattle in this breed category is very great for hard working. Some of the most important draft cattle breeds are amritmahal, Krishna valley, $haryana, Malvi, bhagnari, etc.

Based on Origin

The cattle breeds categorized based on origination are of three different types, as described below.

Deshi Breed

The cattle in this category are local breeds. They are naturally calm and quiet in nature and of medium-sized. The body colors of these breeds are different from each other.

However, these breeds do not produce as much milk and beef as other breeds, but they are great for small scale family farming. One of the most famous deshi cattle breeds is the Red Chittagong.

Foreign Breed

The cattle in this breed category were put together from different parts of the world. Some of the most famous cattle in this category include Sahiwal, jersey, Holstein Friesian, Ayrshire, red Sindhi, haryana, etc.

Hybrid Breed

The hybrid cattle breed is not naturally occurring breeds as they were made through artificial insemination of various types of cattle.
